“The Green Brigade” in Burkina Faso

For 22 years, the “Green Brigade,” a group of 3,000 volunteer women, has committed to sweeping the streets of the city of Ouagadougou at least twice a week. Their efforts to improve the cleanliness and sanitation of their city have earned several regional and international awards. Solid waste disposal is a major problem in Burkina Faso, where garbage is often either thrown in dumps or in the streets of urban centers.

The “Green Brigade” is just one of many volunteer programs under the Burkina Faso National Volunteer Program (PNVB) created under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Youth and financial supervision by the Ministry of Finance as a project, thanks to the efforts of the Burkinabe government. Additional support is provided by the United National Development Programme, United Nations Volunteer Programme, and France Volontaires.
