Building Climate Resilience in Comoros

The island state of Comoros is a small, not-well-known cluster of 4 islands that have been battered by more frequent climate disasters in recent years. A subdivision of UNDP (United Nations Development Program) Comoros is striving to build climate resilience in 3 out of 4 main islands. The group has planted economically efficient produce for farmers located in those regions, boosting income and revenue and ensuring greater individual and financial stability in the face of disaster rebound. Fahamiya Abdou, a volunteer with UNDP Comoros since 2018, has worked extremely hard to rally for environmental and ecosystem preservation. In the aftermath of a 2019 cyclone, Fahamiya and other volunteers in her subdivision rallied to reforest destroyed areas and provide immediate humanitarian assistance. She has been helping local communities on the islands to build resilience and resistance to future climate events. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, her team has shifted its efforts and focus to disinfecting local markets to stop the spread.
