Sustainable Hospitality in Cambodia
The Cardamom Tented Camp won the 2022 Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) Sustainable Hotel Award for Climate Action. The innovative camp is credited with preserving 180 square kilometers of lowland rainforest in the Botum Sakor national park in southwest Cambodia. The forest is estimated to sequester over 100,000 tons of carbon per year.
The tented camp’s other environmental benefits include wildlife protection, energy consumption, and wastewater. Cardamom supports the salaries of the forest rangers who protect wildlife from illegal poachers, loggers, riverbank sand dredgers, and land encroachers. Botum Sakor is home to many species, including leopards, elephants, and otters.
The tented camp’s electricity comes entirely from solar panel, and the camp uses low-impact heating and cooking, and natural wastewater filtration process.
The seven HIPAC judges, mostly from sustainability institutions, recognized Cardamom Tented Camp for supporting a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Life on Land, Clean and Affordable Energy, Decent Work, Economic Growth, Climate Action, and Partnerships.
